Resilience in Teams: Strengthening Leaders and Employees

Life is demanding today, its changes and challenges manifest themselves in society and the economy and are also felt within leadership and teamwork. People and systems react differently: they react in ways that range from reactive behavior, working to rule, withdrawing, or the feeling of being permanently overwhelmed right up to experiencing a significant impact on their mental health in the form of anxiety, lack of energy, and even exhaustion, being overworked, or burnout. In some cases, these effects catch leaders by surprise.

Resilience refers to the resilience of individuals, as well as entire teams, departments, and organisations. Periods of uncertainty and upheaval are also times during which the resilience of individuals and society is put to the test: To what extent can we accept what cannot be changed and make a full commitment wherever we have the opportunity to shape things? Do we stay optimistic even when the going gets tough? Do we have fundamental faith in our own effectiveness? Can we create a meaningful vision of the future that gives us the ability to motivate ourselves and keep our eye on the ball, even or especially in challenging times? 

Although the foundation is laid in childhood, resilience can be strengthened and improved throughout a whole lifetime.

During the 5P resilience workshops, awareness is raised for new routines and thought processes, they are reflected upon and practiced. One motto is “Don't believe everything you think” and in the course of the training, old beliefs are questioned, weeded out and replaced with more useful ones. A foundation is laid through knowledge and understanding, in order to then be able to process the gained knowledge and the experiences better and to be able to take away truly new approaches and lessons that make sense for every participant.
 

Focus Areas of the 5P Resilience Workshop: Knowledge, Integration, Insight, Sensing

Focus of the 5P resilience workshop

1. Knowledge
The "Knowledge" segment addresses the factual knowledge and background on resilience, including the effect mechanisms of beliefs and both conscious and unconscious behavior. The goal is to provide participants with a theoretical understanding of resilience, serving as a foundation for further development.

2. Awareness
In the "Awareness" segment, self-awareness is emphasized as the key to developing a resilient attitude towards oneself and others. This area focuses on helping participants gain a deeper understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses and learning how to respond resiliently to challenges.

3. Feeling
The "Feeling" segment highlights physical exercises and experiences related to recognizing what relaxation feels like and understanding how the body and one's perceptions can serve as a compass. It emphasizes developing bodily awareness and identifying physical responses to stress while promoting relaxation techniques.

4. Integration
The "Integration" segment focuses on working together to develop the necessary resources and methods for maintaining resilience. This part of the workshop synthesizes the insights and experiences gained in the previous segments, aiming to create practical strategies and tools that help participants sustain their resilience over time.
 

While resilience coaching puts the individual person into the spotlight and more openness right from the start will often achieve faster progress, the advantage of group workshops is that everyone can benefit from the whole group’s collective experience and grow together.

The workshop „Resilience und mental health“ specifically aims to help leaders to notice signs of people being overwhelmed and to handle such situations competently – to address them and to offer appropriate support in a timely manner. This also includes recognising the limits of their own abilities (and, for example, using “protective shield” offers).

Phase 1: The compulsive need to prove oneself
In this initial phase, individuals often try to prove their abilities to themselves and others, leading to excessive self-demands.

Phase 2: Increased efforts
To meet their own high standards, affected individuals increase their efforts, resulting in a heightened workload.

Phase 3: Neglecting own needs
In this phase, individuals begin to neglect their own needs, such as taking breaks, proper nutrition, and social interactions.

Phase 4: Refusal to think about conflicts
Conflicts arising from overload are ignored or repressed instead of being addressed and resolved.

Phase 5: Reinterpretation of values
Personal values and priorities shift, often leading to a stronger focus on work and success.

Phase 6: Denial of problems
Individuals deny the existence of problems, which prevents constructive engagement with the situation.

Phase 7: Withdrawal
Affected individuals increasingly withdraw, both professionally and personally, avoiding social interactions.

Phase 8: Observable change in behavior
This phase involves noticeable changes in behavior, often characterized by increased irritability, withdrawal from responsibilities, and a significant decrease in productivity. These changes further intensify the difficulties faced by the individual.

Phase 9: Depersonalization
There is a sense of alienation from oneself and others, often accompanied by a loss of empathy and emotional coldness.

Phase 10: Feeling empty inside
Individuals feel internally empty and burnt out, lacking energy or motivation.

Phase 11: Depression
This phase can lead to severe depression, characterized by hopelessness and exhaustion.

Phase 12: Complete exhaustion
In the final stage, complete physical and emotional exhaustion occurs, often accompanied by serious health issues.
